Minimum Requirements
To qualify for this position, you must meet the following essential criteria:
- Grade 12 / Senior Certificate (Matric)
- PSIRA Grade C Accreditation
- Minimum of 3 years of experience in retail security, such as in shopping malls or warehouses
Advantageous:
- At least 1 year of experience in a similar security role
Key Responsibilities
As a Dis-Chem Security Guard, your primary duty is to create a secure environment. Below are your main responsibilities:
Patrolling and Surveillance
- Conduct regular random patrols of the premises to increase visibility and deter criminal activity.
- Monitor CCTV cameras, alarms, and emergency equipment to detect suspicious activities.
- Stay alert during night shifts or when working alone, ensuring premises remain secure at all times.
Access Control
- Control and document access to the premises for vehicles, pedestrians, staff, and suppliers.
- Authorize entry only for individuals with proper clearance.
- Conduct staff and vehicle searches to prevent theft and unauthorized removal of goods.
Incident Response
- Investigate disturbances, report signs of damage or unlawful entry, and act promptly.
- Contact police or emergency authorities when required, and provide detailed written reports.
- Assist emergency teams during evacuations, guiding staff and customers safely to assembly points.
Customer Service
- Remain professional, approachable, and courteous at all times.
- Assist visitors, employees, and customers by offering directions and support.
- Provide ongoing safety advice and raise awareness about security procedures.
Loss Prevention
- Protect company assets against theft, vandalism, and dishonest actions.
- Maintain occurrence books and complete all registers accurately.
- Supervise refuse removal according to company standards to prevent theft.
Opening and Closing Procedures
- Be present and vigilant during site opening and closing times.
- Ensure all doors, windows, and water taps are secured before leaving.
Crisis Management
- Respond quickly to crisis situations, including robbery or fire incidents.
- Take immediate action to minimize loss or injury.
- Provide management with detailed incident reports after any crisis.
Additional Duties and Best Practices
Security guards at Dis-Chem play a proactive role in ensuring that safety protocols are followed consistently. They must always remain visible to act as a deterrent against unlawful activities. Guards must interpret any unusual behavior quickly and take appropriate action to prevent escalation.
Performing thorough personnel and vehicle searches throughout the day is essential. Guards are expected to report suspicious activities verbally and submit detailed written reports without delay. During emergencies such as fires, guards help manage crowds and ensure safe evacuation procedures are followed.
The role also involves providing security-related guidance to staff and customers to raise awareness and minimize risks. Guards are trained to respond calmly and efficiently during armed robberies, assaults, or other high-risk incidents. Their ability to call for help promptly can prevent significant losses and protect lives.

Essential Skills
- Knowledge of PSIRA regulations
- Strong Health and Safety awareness
- Ability to read, write, and communicate fluently in English
Advantageous Skills
- Knowledge of a third language for improved communication with diverse customers
Employment Conditions
- PSIRA registration and Grade C accreditation are mandatory
- Clear criminal and credit records are required
- A valid driver’s license, reliable transport, and PDP (when deployed as a driver) are preferred
